The entire community is invited to attend the John Brown University Cathedral Choir Spring Break Tour Concert to be held at Westbrooke Church at 7pm on March 20.

The Cathedral Choir is comprised of 51 of the most talented singers at JBU. The choir’s long standing tradition of excellence began in 1942. Several current choir members are from the Kansas City area: sophomore David LaGue, Kansas City, Mo.; junior Johanna Merwin, senior Matthew Musgrave, Lee’s Summit, Mo, freshman Lindsey Johnston, Paola, Ks and junior Clare Young, Spring Hill, Ks.

“This is a great opportunity for our community to enjoy an excellent performance, as well as a way for our church family to serve,” said Nina Sullivan, who is coordinating the event at Westbrooke Church. “Our members are serving as host families, providing snacks and meals for the students, as well as setting up the church for the performance.”

“John Brown University continues to uphold the very best tradition of excellence in choral singing,” said Paul Smith, choir director and professor of music at JBU. “From the 17th century exuberance of Hans Leo Hassler’s ‘Cantate Domino’ and the eight part rich sonorities of Rachmaninoff’s ‘Glory be to God’ to the 21st century foot tapping spiritual of Rollo Dilworth’s ‘Roll Jordan, Roll!’ the choir will bring to audiences music that will inspire them musically and spiritually.”

The choir has toured extensively all over the United States and in Northern Ireland. In addition to annual tours, the choir is featured in the annual Candlelight Service at JBU each December.

In 2008 the Cathedral Choir recorded a CD in Belfast, Northern Ireland at the famed St. Mark’s, home church of C. S. Lewis. The CD will be on sale at each of the choir’s appearances.

John Brown University is a private Christian university, ranked second by U.S. News & World Report in the Southern Region. JBU enrolls more than 2,000 students from 42 states and 45 countries. JBU is a member of Arkansas’ Independent Colleges and Universities and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.

Westbrooke members

We’ll need a few more families to host students at their homes on Saturday March 20th. This would entail coming to the church Saturday night 5:30 and bring a dish or two for a potluck meet and greet before the 7PM concert. Providing transportation to your home that night for the night, then a light breakfast and transportation back to church Sunday by 8:00AM. Please contact Nina Sullivan to volunteer or to get more information.

The growth of AWANA continues to be phenomenal. We started with 9 Children last fall and now have 43 Children! AWANA just keeps growing! True testament to the Lord’s grace and blessings!

Now for a good problem to have – we need to ask for more volunteers. We are in real need of more help, as T&T, Sparks, and especially Cubbies are stretched to the limit.

Volunteers don’t even have to commit to meet every Sunday evening – but it would be great! We will take all help we can get even if it is for only one night. Volunteers will be listening to children reciting their verses, helping with game time and so forth.

Thank you for your consideration!!

Twenty-two adults and youth from Westbrooke will be traveling to Arlington, Texas to assist with Vacation Bible School, evangelism, feeding the hungry & helping Jon & Hannah Taussig in their ministry.

Each team member has been asked to raise $75 to help fund the trip, and will be seeking to gain this support from the Body.

On Sunday, there will be pictures of the mission team on a table in the foyer by the bake sale. Please consider taking a picture to pray for that person as a way to support the team during the trip.

Last year, thanks to an outpouring of financial and prayer support, the team was able to provide an $800 gift to Jon and Hannah at the end of the trip to support their ongoing ministry.

If you want to support a specific member of the mission team, you can send checks to the office, made out to “Westbrooke Church,” with the individual’s name written in the memo.

Supplies will be needed for the trip and for the various activities the team will do while they’re there. Donations of the following would be greatly appreciated:

crayons

glue sticks/elmer’s glue

washable markers – (please no permanent markers)

colored construction paper

plastic necklace rope and beads to make necklaces – in white, red, green and black.

gift cards for Matt Wenger, Nathan Schad, Jon & family – Walmart or Target

nonperishable snacks for the team

Supplies can be dropped off at the church in the box by the picture table.

Thank you from Dean and all the Mission Arlington team.
